Elevation Surface Model (ESM)
Overview:
The Elevation Surface Model (ESM) is a multi-part standard that:
- meets Defence requirements for elevation data, to include surface modelling of bare earth and vegetation;
- is designed to support a wide range of resolutions based on user need;
- is supported by three standardised encodings
- TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) + GeoTIFF (Geospatial Tagged Image File Format)
- GMLJP2 (JPEG2000 files in Geography Markup Language (GML))
- NTIF/NSIF (National Imagery Transmission Format File/NATO Secondary Imagery Format)
- provides backward compatability with U.S. MIL-PRF-89020B, Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) and NATO STANAG 3809
- serves as the base standards for the Defense Gridded Elevation Data (DGED) Data Product Specification (DPS)
The diagram below illustrates the document relationships of this standard.
116-1, Elevation Surface Model (ESM) Standardized Profile
The Elevation Surface Model (ESM) establishes the data content model for elevation data according to the principles of a Data Content Model (ISO 19129 - Imagery, gridded and coverage data framework) for elevation, including the Grid or point coverage, TIN coverage + point set data types and the ESM Data dictionary (with metadata based on DMF – DGIWG Metadata Foundation). The ESM specification supports:
- a wide-range of resolutions of elevation surface data
- surface modelling of bare earth and vegetation, as well as underwater features
EXCLUDES Contour lines
116-1 SD1, Elevation Surface Model (ESM): UML model (zipped .eap, based on GML and GMLCOV)
This is the ESM implementation model for 116-1 expressed in UML (Unified Modeling Language). It is based on:
- GML (Geography Markup Language defined by OGC) for Point Set model
- GMLCOV (GML 3.2.1 Application Schema - Coverages by OGC)
- ESM Data Dictionary
- DMF (DGIWG Metadata Foundation)
NOTE:The files are compressed in a zipped .EAP file (Enterprise Architect Project file)
116-2, Elevation Surface Model (ESM): GML Application Schema
This standard specifies the Application schema for ESM. It defines the process to derive ESM application schemas, expressed in GML (the Geography Markup Language defined by OGC), from the UML model and metadata defined in 116-1 SD1. it is based on:
- GMLCOV (also known as GML 3.2.1 Application Schema - Coverages drafted by OGC)
- a point-set extension (based on gml:multiPoint 0D aggregate type)
EXCLUDES TIN (Triangular Irregular Networks)
116-2 SD1, Elevation Surface Model (ESM): GML schemas (zipped .xsd)
These are the ESM XML schemas associated to 116-2, expressed in GML (the Geography Markup Language defined by OGC)
NOTE:The files are compressed .XSD file (Xml Schema Definition file)
116-3-1, Elevation Surface Model (ESM) - Encoding Rules - Part 1: Core
These ESM Core Encoding Rules provide the common encoding rules that are recommended for ESM data and metadata. It MUST be used with:
- GeoTIFF encoding rules defined in 116-3-2, or
- GMLJP2 encoding rules defined in 116-3-3, or
- NSIF encoding rules defined in 116-3-4
This standard is dependent on:
- UML model and metadata defined in 116-1 SD1
- GML application schema defined in 116-2 (if an ESM application schema is implemented)
EXCLUDES TIN (Triangular Irregular Networks)
116-3-2, Elevation Surface Model (ESM) - Encoding Rules - Part 2: GeoTIFF
These encoding rules support the generation and consumption of ESM GeoTIFF files, and MUST be used with Core Encoding Rules defined in 116-3-1
This standard is dependent on:
- DGIWG 108 - GeoTIFF Profile for Georeferenced Imagery
- UML model and metadata defined in 116-1 SD1
116-3-3, Elevation Surface Model (ESM) - Encoding Rules - Part 3: GMLJP2
These encoding rules support the generation and consumption of ESM GMLJP2 files; and define how to encode and embed georeferenced JPEG2000 metadata using Geography Markup Language (GML)
This standard is dependent on:
- DGIWG 104 and 104(2)- GMLJP2 profiles
- UML model and metadata defined in 116-1 SD1
116-3-4, Elevation Surface Model (ESM) - Encoding Rules - Part 4: NATO Secondary Image Format (NSIF)
These encoding rules support the generation and consumption of ESM NSIF files (NATO Secondary Image Format), and MUST be used with Core Encoding Rules defined in 116-3-1
This standard is dependent on:
- STANAG 4545 (NSIF)
- UML model and metadata defined in 116-1 SD1
