Web Map Service
Overview:
A Web Map Service (WMS) produces maps of spatially referenced data dynamically from geographic information. ISO 19128: 2005 defines a “map” to be a portrayal of geographic information as a digital image file suitable for display on a computer screen. The digital image is a visual representation of the data and is not the data itself. WMS-produced maps are generally rendered in a pictorial format such as PNG, GIF or JPEG.
Technical specifications sometimes have optional features, such that two conforming implementations may not inter-operate completely due to choosing different sets of optional features to support. Even when no formal optional features exist within a standard, there is still a risk that vendors will not implement functionality that is most important to the military community.
This profile:
- references the different operations and parameters of the base standard
- defines specific Defence requirements, recommendations and guidelines for implementations of ISO 19128:2005 Geographic information - Web map server interface and OpenGIS Web Map Server Implementation Specification 1.3.0 (06-042)
- defines the conformance classes: 1) DGIWG Basic WMS, and 2) DGIWG Queryable WMS, which extends the DGIWG Basic WMS
- mandates minimum usability requirements for the operational coalition environment
- is designed to both increase interoperability between WMS servers and to improve the ease of implementation of the WMS standard
